Among all the characters, Nick can break down through another's pretenses. Like, for example, when Daisy meets him for the first time in the book, and after she charms him, he comments, "That was a way she had." He isn't vulnerable to other people's charms and so, establishes himself as a rather objective narrator.

Really?
I felt that Nick as a narrator was very unreliable. In the first chapter, Nick acknowledges that Gatsby represented everything for which he had an 'unaffected scorn', and yet towards the end his language of Gatsby is one of total admiration. The muddled chronology also reflects how unreliable he is; he remembers only what he thinks is important. Also, I don't feel that the audience can relate to Nick, there is an obvious distance between us and him which could be due to Fitzgerald's use of delayed character revelation but ... just my opinion. :)Posted 2 months ago #
