The Parson is a “learned man” who gives regular sermons and is devoted to his congregation, often donating to them out of his own salary when church collections for the poor aren’t enough to cover their needs. Although he could probably get a more comfortable position somewhere else, he refuses to leave his parishioners because he sees how much they need his support.

The Ploughman is the Parson’s brother. He works hard and loves God. He rides a mare. He does not tell a tale.
