Heart of Darkness General Manager / Bricklayer
by Joseph Conrad

These are two different characters but are closely related. Both are described as either being empty (the manager) or being made up of nothing of substance, like loose dirt and papier-mâché (the bricklayer). Both men typify the ruthless Imperialist, and both are out to gain what they can with little regard for those they are not in league with. In addition, both men loathe Kurtz because of his success in the Company. Marlow doesn't care much for either one, and often provokes them for his amusement.
