The Russian is a follower of Kurtz—he is completely enthralled by him. He also fits the archetype of the Fool, both in appearance and action. Because Marlow is a fellow sailor, he entrusts certain secrets about Kurtz to him. Marlow aids in his escape rather than allow the general manager to have him hanged.
